About AATMJ

The Asian Academy for Temporomandibular Joint (AATMJ) was established on September 18, 2009, in Seoul, Korea, by representatives from China, Japan, and Korea, following earlier bilateral academic-exchange agreements among the three founding national societies.
At its inception, the academy was created to promote research on temporomandibular joint disorders and dental health through the sharing of academic information, resources, and professional collaboration across Asia.
While the original framework centered on three countries and biennial academic meetings, AATMJ has since grown into a broader regional platform.
By 2019, its congresses were already being described as biannual meetings hosted by four countries-Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines-and recent reports indicate participation by around 400 members from these countries, with plans for further expansion across Asia.
The academy has continued its academic development through major congresses, including the 7th Asian Academic Congress for TMJ in Beijing in 2023 and the 8th in the Philippines in 2025, as well as through regular training seminars and international educational exchange.
Today, AATMJ serves as an important regional network for advancing research, clinical practice, and professional friendship in the field of temporomandibular joint disorders and related disciplines.

The following are the detailed minutes of the AATMJ agreement:

  • Academic seminars will be held every two years, rotating among Korea, China, and Japan. The second and third seminars will be held in Japan and China, respectively.

  • The Organizing Committee will recommend two members from each of the three countries: Korea, China, and Japan.

  • AATMJ will develop projects that may attract the participation of other countries or regions in Asia.

  • Dr. Chung Hoon from Korea will serve as the temporary Executive Director.

We hope that many Asian countries will join the Asian Academy for Temporomandibular Joint (AATMJ), contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint studies in their respective countries, and foster friendly relationships among the peoples of Asia. We look forward to the participation of many Asian countries in the Academy.
